Product Description A unique, patented cover design lets you release as many ice cubes as you need. The cover also makes it easy to stack multiple ice cube trays, and eliminates freezer odor from permeating your cubes. The innovative rounded ice cubes release easily, and the translucent cover lets you see when it's time to refill. Makes 14 cubes. Dishwasher safe.
Amazon.com Review No more ice cubes slithering across your counter or floor and no more sloshing a just-filled ice cube tray on your way to the fridge--Oxo has come to the rescue with this nifty, easy-release tray with a sliding lid. Just fill the tray with water, slide the lid on, and slip the tray into the freezer. The lid design allows you to stack more trays or other items on top: a great space-saving feature. To dispense the ice cubes, slide the lid in either direction until the desired number of cubes are exposed, then flip the tray over to release the cubes. The clever lid design lets you release a single cube or a dozen, and both tray and lid have a solid feel, with just the right amount of give. Sliding the lid on a just-filled tray, however, takes a little practice (the lid sticks a bit), but placing the tray on a firm surface and sliding evenly and firmly should do the trick. --C. Big but excellent design September 5, 2010 Grace Guia (ny) Pros:
Excellent design. Sliding cover is designed to let you dispense cubes one at a time. To loosen the cubes just run water over the bottom and shake the tray while locking cover is completely on.
Cons:
A little bigger than the basic ice cube trays. Design does not consider limited freezer space/s. I started filling the tray only halfway to get smaller cubes. I used to bartend so I wish the ice cubes were half the size just like in bars and nightclubs.
If you hear of same in smaller size alert me by commenting on my review.
Pretend you didn't buy the lids... August 28, 2010 OmnivorousMom (Bay Area, CA) Oxo ice cube trays work really well for freezing babyfood, stock, or wine reductions. Very easy to remove intact frozen crescents. The lids, however, are completely useless. I'd like to pretend I didn't have to purchase that extra plastic and give the trays a full 5 stars. Why exactly do ice cube trays need lids in the first place??
I wrote about our experience using these trays to freeze homemade babyfood at Raising An Omnivorous Child. Find the post "Freezing Babyfood" in the Archives for August 2010.
Exellent for freezing home-made baby food!!! August 2, 2010 K. Pittman 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
These may not work great for water for ice cubes, but they have worked flawlessly for freezing baby food. Perhaps because the purees are bit thicker than water (?). Sure it's a little messy filling the cubes with the purees, but they pop out with great ease, one at a time, perfect portions, and it cleans up super easily, or pop it in the dishwasher (top rack) and they're good to go! I would recommend them, and am on Amazon right now to buy another, after purchasing one to see how it would work for this reason!
what a mess... June 25, 2010 Totoche (Lexington, MA) This is a disappointing Oxo product - and I'm a fan. Filling these results in water slopping all over the place - I have to dry the kichen floor after each attempt to put these in the freezer. Throwing it out.
It's also very space inefficient - tray takes up all the room of regular tray but produces only 50% as much ice.
Tremendous Product Innovation May 27, 2010 Kevin M. Greenstein (Boston, MA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I am really surprised to see that the reviews for this product are so mixed. My family's experience with the Oxo Good Grips Ice Cube tray has been inarguably positive. In my mind, the purpose of an ice cube tray is to make ice cubes, and that experience has traditionally had three problems, all of which have been elegantly solved by the Oxo tray:
1) Water spilling out of the uncovered ice cube trays en route to the freezer [Problem solved: Oxo tray's covers prevent water from spilling out]
2) Other items in the freezer falling into the not-yet-frozen ice cube compartments and freezing there [Problem solved: Oxo tray's covers prevent things from falling into the ice cube compartments]
3) Ice cubes in the bottom tray (if stacked) crystallizing and being totally impossible to get out of the tray [Problem solved: both top and bottom trays of ice cubes release perfectly every time]
The Oxo trays solve all of these problems and deliver perfect ice cubes every time. I couldn't recommend this product more highly.
