5 out of 5 stars An excellent product and a money-saver   July 28, 2010
Amazon Man (Manhattan)
This is an excellent, high-quality product which makes delicious soda water and which will pay for itself in a month or two if you buy the Leland chargers in packs of 100.

The siphon is stylish and of restaurant quality workmanship and durability, and the Leland chargers lack nothing despite their relatively cheap price.

The water is so delicious that you may find yourself drinking it straight instead of going to sugary soft drinks. You may even drop a few pounds! (Although it must be said that the siphon's strong stream makes a mean egg cream....)

Some reviewers have said that the water doesn't come out bubbly enough, but this isn't the case if you follow the instructions. Simply make sure that the cap is tightly seated and that the water is ice cold. (Even if you don't recall your high school chemistry - that gases dissolve best in cold water, not hot - you know from experience that warm soda goes flat almost at once.) After the charging, shake the siphon vigorously to dissolve the gas, and you should have no problem.

One big advantage of any siphon is that you don't have to open it to get at the soda water. So the soda water doesn't go flat, as it does when you open and close large store-bought bottles.

Warning: If you don't seat the cap tightly on the bottle, you'll have spurting and leakage. So I recommend that, until you're completely comfortable with the operating procedure, you should practice at a safe distance from electrical equipment and anything else which doesn't get along well with water.

The product is great - very well made and useful. Makes great soda water -- IF you do it right. The instructions that come with it are terrible, though. Thank goodness for these reviews!!!

5 out of 5 stars ICE cold purified water   July 22, 2010
E. Swanson (Northern Illinois)
Having ice cold water is the KEY, as well as having (almost) pure water. Contaminants in tap water takes up room between the molecules of water where you want the CO2 to go. Water is most dense at 39 degrees Fahrenheit and expands as it nears the boiling point as well as absolute zero. Having water nearer to 32-33 deg. F helps a lot. I use bottled purified water (reverse osmosis) and put it in the freezer until some of it becomes ice. Put in the siphon (Read the directions, don't just look at the pictures, it clearly states to fill it until water is overflowing out of the fill tube top. There is an air gap caused by the insertion of the fill tube.) Put a charger (only one)in and shake, then put in the fridge with the charger still attached for a couple of hours. After your first use, replace the charger with the cap and enjoy. It makes a soda that is more like champaign than bottled soda water, but after a few minutes of swimming around in ice cubes and scotch the homemade soda water still has a fizzy feeling as opposed to bottled seltzer water. Don't worry about it "exploding". The siphon has a relief valve that will eliminate over pressurization as well as the siphon will leak if there is too much pressure, and the bottle is built with a wall thickness heavier than a CO2 tank used for paint ball guns which is designed to handle 1000psi working pressure. The siphon will max out at about 120psi. I'm completely satisfied with this soda siphon and would buy it again if it is at all possible to wear it out. Also, add 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon baking soda to the bottle before filling to approximate the taste of club soda if thats what you want.

4 out of 5 stars Does what it does well.   July 17, 2010
Richmix
I bought this bottle to make carbonated water on demand for special drinks like homemade cream sodas. It does that just fine. I do have a few gripes about it, though, so here's my short pros vs cons list:

Pros

+ Looks nice.
+ Cheaper than bottled seltzer (if you can find an inexpensive bulk CO2 supplier)
+ Fast. You can get a 1 L bottle of water ready in under a minute.
+ Air tight. When making water for a small glass of something, keeping the left over water in the bottle works fine. A week later, it'll still be bubbly. Screw the lid on tight, though!

Cons

- Small. 1 L of water doesn't last very long at all.
- Confusing. The instruction manual says to fill the thing about 2/3 full. I have no idea how to manage this. I can't see inside the bottle well enough to see how full it is, and there is no fill level indicator.
- Inconvenient. Sort of. CO2 doesn't mix too well with warm water, so for best results, you have to have cold water ready for making carbonated water. For me, that means keeping a bottle of water in the fridge and refilling it every time I make carbonated water. It also helps tremendously to keep the thing in the fridge. That means if it comes down to picking between soda water and milk, you'll have to cut some corners somewhere.
- Potentially expensive. I try to buy bulk chargers at no more than 50c each, but they can be hard to find at that price. Since I almost never use the full liter one charger produces (more on that after), much of an increase over 50c per charger puts water from this thing about on par with bottled water. Bad.

I realize the "potentially expensive" con doesn't line up with the "cheaper than bottled seltzer" pro, so let me explain. The primary reason both things are on there is that it can be difficult sometimes to find inexpensive CO2 chargers. Packs of ten from iSi or other companies can often be a dollar each or more, and ten chargers don't go very far. Buying in bulk from companies like Leland or Mr. Fizz goes a long way to knock this expense down. However, as I mentioned in one of the other cons, there is no window on the body of the bottle to see how much liquid is inside. When I make carbonated water, I use as much as I can, but when I suspect there is less than six to eight ounces left, I dump the rest and make more. Trouble is, I have to rely on my best guess, which without committing to careful measuring is not good. This sometimes means more wasted water than I intend to waste, which means higher cost per unit used. Oh, what I would give for a tiny fill level strip on this thing.

Overall a good product. Worth every penny for the heavy seltzer drinker.

This syphon worked as many others reviewed. The water needs to be cold not cool and well shaken for the true soda experience. I would recommend this to any one interested in getting away from store bought sparkling water.
